Shared housing for veterans:

Shared Housing, is renting a room in a veteran-only home and sharing a common living area, bathroom and kitchen area.

Individual Rooms:

Veterans occupy a private room in a multiple unit complex, with a build in bathroom. (No cooking facilities)

Single Family Home:

Single family housing is dedicated for the veteran and their family only.

Here is exactly how the program works from start to finish:

Access and Eligibility: The program is open to eligible homeless Veterans. Eligibility is generally determined by your discharge status, income, and literal homelessness or at-risk status. You can apply by calling the at National Call Center for Homeless Veterans at (877) 424-3838 for assistance.
The Rental Subsidy: Once approved, Veterans receive a Housing Choice Voucher. You will look for a private apartment that accepts these vouchers. You are required to pay roughly 30% of your adjusted monthly income toward rent, while the VA and local Public Housing Authority (PHA) pay the remaining balance directly to the landlord.
Supportive Case Management: Unlike standard housing vouchers, HUD-VASH pairs you with a dedicated VA case manager. They will help you with everything from initial housing searches and lease signing to connecting with primary care, mental health counseling, and substance use treatment.
